Diabetes is a serious medical condition that happens due to elevated glucose levels in the blood. The feet are often affected, and daily attention must be paid to them. This can begin with washing and drying the feet, followed by checking the soles for existing cuts, bruises, or scrapes. Secondly, the toenails must be trimmed correctly, and many people prefer to schedule regular visits to a podiatrist who can cut toenails properly. It is beneficial to wear shoes that fit correctly, and slippers worn inside the house can help to protect the feet while walking. Additionally, wearing sneakers while at the beach can help to shield the skin on the feet from the sand and sun. Poor circulation may be improved when the feet are frequently elevated, and a gentle exercise program is implemented. Many diabetic patients have high glucose levels as a result of the types of foods that are consumed. It is beneficial to reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks and limit bread and pasta as much as possible. If you have diabetes, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can treat and help you to manage this condition.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Bill Brown, DPM from Brown Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

What Is a Bunionette?

A bunionette, or tailor’s bunion, is a bony growth on the pinky toe classified as a deformity. It is the pinky counterpart of the more c,ommon bunion that forms on the big toe joint. When a bunionette and a bunion occur together, it is referred to as having a splayfoot. These growths are thought to develop from wearing narrow, tight shoes. However, some people may be genetically predisposed to bunions, due to an abnormality or enlargement of the toe ligament. Bunionettes can be visible to the eyes, swollen, and tender when palpated. If pain from a bunionette is not relieved with conservative treatments like wearing wider shoes or using orthotics, surgery may be necessary. If you have bunion problems and are experiencing discomfort, contact a podiatrist who can suggest the proper course of action for you.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Bill Brown, DPM of Brown Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Replacing Running Shoes

Running can be one of the most exhilarating and rewarding ways for some people to get in their daily dose of exercise. However, there are many things an individual may do before, during, and after running that can increase their risk of developing some kind of running injury. One important example is when an individual does not know when to replace their shoes. For example, sometimes the heel of a running shoe will become so worn down that it no longer provides support to the heel of the foot. The heel of the shoe can become worn down for many reasons. One habit that may be damaging the heels of your shoes is failing to lace and unlace the shoes when taking them on and off. By “toeing off” the shoes, you can negatively impact the heel. Contact a podiatrist today for more information about how to protect the heel of your shoes.

All runners should take extra precaution when trying to avoid injury. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Bill Brown, DPM of Brown Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

There are a lot of mistakes a runner can make prior to a workout that can induce injury. A lot of athletes tend to overstretch before running, instead of saving those workouts for a post-run routine. Deep lunges and hand-to-toe hamstring pulls should be performed after a workout instead of during a warmup. Another common mistake is jumping into an intense routine before your body is physically prepared for it. You should try to ease your way into long-distance running instead of forcing yourself to rush into it.

More Tips for Preventing Injury

  • Incorporate Strength Training into Workouts - This will help improve the body’s overall athleticism
  • Improve and Maintain Your Flexibility – Stretching everyday will help improve overall performance
  • “Warm Up” Before Running and “Cool Down” Afterward – A warm up of 5-10 minutes helps get rid of lactic acid in the muscles and prevents delayed muscle soreness
  • Cross-Training is Crucial
  • Wear Proper Running Shoes
  • Have a Formal Gait Analysis – Poor biomechanics can easily cause injury

Diagnosing a Broken Toe

Although they are relatively small parts of the human body, the toes have different bones that can cause problems when broken. Typically, a broken toe can occur from blunt force trauma or from some kind of stress fracture. If you believe that you have broken your toe, it is best to err on the side of caution and contact a medical professional, such as a podiatrist, to get your injury assessed. It is possible that during this examination the podiatrist will ask you specific questions about the injury. It is also possible that an X-ray examination may be conducted. Besides an X-ray, a medical professional might similarly perform bone scans, an MRI, or a CT scan. This is done to give the practitioner a better sense of the underlying injury and how it affected the bones in the toes. If you suspect a broken toe, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Bill Brown, DPM from Brown Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

Foot Care for Dancers

Human feet are complex. Of the 208 bones in the body, 52 of them are in the feet. Feet also provide major service to the body with support, balance, and propulsion. It is necessary for dancers to properly take care of their feet because they depend on the complexity of their feet to dance. They must do what they can to prevent and treat minor injuries and take good care of their feet as a way of life to keep moving. Things they can do include cutting their toenails short and straight across, not wearing colored nail polish so they can see problems brewing under their toenails, keeping calluses trimmed, wearing tights with ballet shoes to help prevent corns from developing, and taking care of foot problems as they arise. If you are a dancer, or if your child is starting to dance, and you would like to learn more about taking care of a dancer’s feet, consult with a podiatrist.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Bill Brown, DPM from Brown Podiatry. Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
